The food discovery I am going to talk about today is pretty unknown, even amongst Italian people. The reason for this unfair anonymity is due to the fact Scazzetta is a signature cake which is exclusively made in a pastry shop in Salerno.
Considering that Salerno is not one of the most popular destinations in Italy or, if it is known, it is regarded as a mere point of support to visit the Amalfi coast on a budget, it makes sense if many people ignore what this city has to offer.

You can’t talk about Scazzetta if you don’t mention the pastry shop which gave birth to this delicious cake: Pantaleone, historical patisserie which opened in 1868. Reaching and spotting this place is incredibly easy, even without the help of the loyal Google Maps. As a matter of fact, the pastry shop is located in Via dei Mercanti, the main road which runs through the historical centre of the city; and its shop windows, full of chocolates, candies and pastries of any kind, are impossible to slip through the cracks.

Everyone in Salerno has eaten the Scazzetta at least once in their life and I’m sure that anyone would agree with defining it as delicious.
If I had to describe this cake, I would say it is a sponge filled with egg cream mixed to wood strawberries. slightly soaked in rum and covered with a strawberry frosting. Not too pretentious, but shockingly yummy.

The only negative side of the Scazzetta is its price: if you get your slice at Pantaleone, you will need to spend 4€, which is crazily expensive for a piece of cake served on a paper plate. In fact, Pantaleone simply is a pastry lab, no bar service is available in the shop hence there is no chance to sit at a table and enjoy your dessert.
Since Pantaleone’s Scazzetta is available in the dessert’s menu of pretty much every restaurant in Salerno, my suggestion is to check out the price and see if it is more convenient to get it there after your meal, or directly at the pastry shop.
In any case, don’t EVER leave Salerno without having given a bite to this awesome cake! It is something unique you can solely get in this city, you wouldn’t forgive yourself for missing this chance.

To conclude, I’d like to share with you the reason why they chose to baptize the cake with this weird name. Basically, ‘scazzetta’ is an Italian word used to refer to the clerical headgear worn by Vatican cardinals, and what links the dessert to this distinctive hat is uniquely the shape and the lively hot-pink colour of the frosting. That’s cute, isn’t it?

    1. I could notice that, in other parts of the world, the simplest piece of cake can cost as much as a meal: Asian cafes are a real attempt to your wallet, if you are a sweet tooth. However, if we only take in consideration Italian average prices, 4 euros for one slice of cake is pretty expensive, more if we bear in mind no service cost is given hence you can’t sit at a table being the place a simple pastry lab and not a cafe. 😟
      In any case, I would always be willing to pay that amount of money (and even more) for a slice of cake equivalent to this high quality! 😍
